To begin this tutorial, download the below image of "Spiderman". I found it by simply googleing it.
Now go to the main menu and choose "Select" then "Color Range" and choose "Reds" in the drop down menu as I have done below.
Click OK to get the following selection.
Next, go to "Image" then "Adjustments" and lastly "Desaturate". Do this two times to get the following. Be certain to keep the selection as we will be using it in step 5 below.
The image in step 4 still has the selection but has been turned off by going to "View" then "Show" and then "Selection Edges". It makes it a cleaner area to work in.
Then, go to "Image" then "Adjustments" and lastly "Levels". Use the below settings and click OK. Then deselect the selection by going to "Select" then "Deselect".
Next, select the "Pen Tool" and draw the below shape.
Then, "Ctrl" click this newly made layer in the Layers Palette to create a selection around it. Then grab the "Magic Wand Tool". Be certain that you are on the Spiderman layer in the Layers Palette then, while holding in the "Shift" key and the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard, start clicking on the background of the canvas as I have done below, adjusting the tolerance as you go.
Next, go to the "Select" menu and choose "Inverse" so the eye of Spiderman and background are not selected. Next, go to "Image" then "Adjustments" and lastly "Desaturate".
The Results!!!
There are many ways to get this effect and even some shortcuts, but I found this way to have the best outcome. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
