Furry Pillow

Sometimes all a designer needs is a little bit of rest to get those design juices flowing again. With this tutorial, you'll learn how to create a furry pillow!

Step 1

Using the Rectangle Tool, draw out a rectangle. Hold down Shift to make the rectangle proportional. I chose a light blue for the fill color and a dark blue for the stroke color.

Step 2

With the rectangle selected, go to Object > Path > Split Into Grid. Use the following settings:

I also flipped the fill and stroke on some of the rectangles as you'll see in the following image. Also, you can select all the rectangles and hit Control + G to group them together.

Step 3

Select your group of objects and go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Pucker & Bloat. Apply 15% and you should get the following:

Step 4

With the group of objects still selected, now go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Roughen. Use a Relative size of 15%, a Detail of 100%, and Smooth points. You should have the following:

Step 5

Now let's make copy of what we have and put it in the back. Select your group of objects and hit Control + C to copy them to the clipboard. Then hit Control + B to paste them in the back. Don't deselect yet!

Holding down Shift + Alt, select one of the corners and drag. This will expand the group of objects outward from the center. You should have the following:

Step 6

Now for the finishing touches. Select both groups of objects and let's apply a bit of a warp to them. Go to Object > Envelope Distort > Make With Warp. Choose a Vertical style of Squeeze with a Bend of 30%. Here's my result:

Since you haven't fallen asleep on me yet, now's your chance to take that much needed knap! Enjoy!
