How to Create Angry Birds Characters in Adobe Illustrator(Exclusive Tutorial)

Heres the image we are attempting to achieve;

Img

Within this tutorial, you will be taught the basic principles in order to create an almost exact replica of the red bird in Angry Birds; in vector format.

You will need;

Adobe Illustrator

A brain

Now, Let's get started!

Bring up an Adobe Illustrator document, I used the A4 sized pre-set in RGB format.

Then draw out a circle, then use the Direct Selection Tool to adjust the circle to make an oddly shaped circle like the picture below.

Img

Now give it a stroke using the settings below;

Img

Now, create 2 oval's using the oval tool.

Img

Rotate them and move them into place so they look like the picture below.

Img

Select everything and click 'Merge' in the Pathfinder window.

Img

It should look like this (you may have to re-apply the stroke.);

Img

Now, hold Alt and drag the outline outwards to duplicate the image.

Img

Leave the duplicate as it is, with no fill and a stroke. But, give the original a red fill (#DA1F2F) but no stroke. Then move the duplicate directly onto the original. So it look's like the below image. Make sure the duplicate is arranged above the red fill layer.

Img

Now use the Pen Tool to create the chest of the bird, don't worry about the edges being rough because the stroke layer should cut it out. Arrange this layer above the red fill layer but below the stroke layer. Fill the layer with a light brown colour (#E3C2AB).

Img

Now, create 2 circle shapes and put them next to each other, give the circles a white fill with the same stroke settings as the base stroke layer.

Img

Now, add 2 circles with a black fill to use as pupils for the eyes.

Img

Use the Pen Tool to create the beak, similar to the image below.

Img

Put the beak together, then arrange the beak so it covers the eyes slightly.

Img

Use the Pen Tool again to create a set of blocky eyebrows.

Img

Create 2 Oval shapes then give them a fill of dark red (#A71E24).

Img

Arrange them below the eyes and below the beak.

Then, create a few more to put on the cheeks.

Now, use the Pen Tool to create 3 separate rectangle shapes all pointing inwards, then use the Merge button in the Pathfinder window to merge them together.

Img

Rotate and place them as shown below.

Img

Use the pen tool again to create a low arc shape, then use a small stroke and the second width profile to create wrinkles.

Img

Use the same stroke colour as the oval shapes that were arranged behind the eyes. Your bird should not look like this.

Img

Now, to finish off the bird we need shadows. Use the Pen Tool to create a shadow along the left side of the bird, with the same colour as the oval shapes and the wrinkles. Then arrange the shape behind the stroke layer but above the fill layer.

Img

Now, do the same for other features such as the eyes and the beak.

Congratulations, you should now have your very own Angry Bird in vector format!
